Arena Starz 5

The #1 seed Arena Starz needed an extra inning to claim the 2011 Spring League Championship 5-4 over the #2 seed Baltimore BlueClaws.

Andrew Yu scored the first run of the game in the top of the 4th giving the BlueClaws a brief lead. The Starz tied the game in the bottom of the inning when Joe Otto singled, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error. He later tagged up on a sac fly to center field.

After a quick top of the 5th the Arena Starz broke out in the bottom half scoring 3 runs on 3 hits and a walk.

It appeared that would be all Starz starting pitcher Aaron Barclay would need; the BlueClaws however had other ideas.

After pitching six strong innings, Barclay ran into trouble with a 4-1 lead in the seventh. A leadoff HBP to Austin Hayden was followed by a Matt Lozinak single and another HBP to Nick Delp. With the bases loaded the Starz coaching staff decided to make a pitching change, going with Brandon Fraley.

Tristen Rickard drew a bases loaded walk to cut the lead to 2. Lozinak and Delp scored on a fielder’s choice and an error to knot the game up at 4-4.

The Starz scored the game winning run in the bottom of the eighth after Jeff Niewiecski singled with one out, stole second and was driven home on an RBI single by championship game MVP Kurt Rawlings.

Baltimore Blueclaws 3

The Arena Starz faced-off against the Baltimore Blueclaws Tuesday at Yankee in week 10 of the Ripken Academy Spring League. The rain would hold off, but the Starz line-up did not.

Out of the first 9 batters to the plate for the Starz in the 2nd inning, 8 of them got hits. After Bryce Butler and Ryan Sheehan singled, Joe Otto hit one of the Starz four triples to right center for 2 RBI’s. Otto was then picked off by Paul Wilson, but the Starz just started to rally again. Jeff Niediewicki knocked in Brett Landis after he reached on an error and Trevor Powers, Nick Turnbull, and Dylan Reichart combined for three hits to get the Starz another run.

At the end of two the Starz were ahead 5-0.

Brandon Fraley, the Starz starting pitcher, was perfect for 3 innings before being relieved by Ryan Sheehan.

Sheehan was lights out in the 4th inning, but the Blueclaws got to him in the 5th. After a 1-out walk to Matt Wolfe, Jordan Menfee singled to give the Blueclaws first and second. Sheehan walked Andrew Yu and the bases were loaded for Donte Freeza. Freeza hit a shot in the gap to score Wolfe and Menfee.

Tristan Rickard hit a fly ball to right field that was deep enough to score Yu from third and the Blueclaws were right back in the game only down 5-3.

The Starz would answer back in their half of the 5th inning with a couple runs of their own. Turnbull led off the inning with a walk and Reichart got him over with a great sacrifice bunt that almost turned into a hit. Fraley singled but was thrown out by Freeza, the Blueclaws catcher, at second. Turnbull was able to score on the throw, giving the Starz a three run lead. Kurt Rawlings singled and Aaron Barclay walked to put two men on for Trae Fenner. Fenner hit a bomb in the gap for his second triple of the game scoring Rawlings and Barclay.

The Starz would score another run in the 6th inning on an RBI fielder’s choice by Niediewicki. Niediewicki would also come in to pitch for the last 2 and 2/3 of the game to shut the Blueclaws down for a 9-3 Starz victory.

Baltimore Blueclaws 4

The Baltimore Blueclaws faced off against the Carroll Manor Cardinals under the lights at Yankee Thursday night. Brian Smith and the Blueclaws wasted no time striking first. Smith led the game off with a single and would later score. The Cardinals tried to answer back in the bottom half of the 1st inning, but the rally was cut short with runners on first and third.

The Cardinals would finally manufacture a few runs in the 2nd inning to take control of the game. Max Keefe placed a sacrifice bunt to get Luke Johnson and Tony Schultz over. Two wild pitches later, and the Cardinals were on top 2-1. The Cardinals would add another run on a Nico Meisel single in the top of the 2nd to give themselves a 3-1 lead.

Dante Freeza led the Blueclaws off in the 2nd inning with an infield base hit. Paul Wilson moved Freeza over with a bunt to get him into scoring position. A passed ball would get Freeza to third and a ground ball to shortstop by Smith got Freeza across the plate. The Blueclaws headed into the 4th inning just trailing by one run, 3-2.

Both teams would go quiet in the 4th inning, but the Cardinals made up for it in the 5th. Meisel walked, Paul Dipino singled, and the table was set for Jacob Sousa. Sousa hit a shot to right center for a 3-run homerun to give the Cardinals a 6-2 lead. Ryan Wells followed Sousa with a single and would later score on a couple errors by the Blueclaws.

The Blueclaws continued to fight, and scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th. Smith and Tristen Rickard led the inning off with singles, which brought Austin Hayden to the plate with runners in scoring position. Hayden singled to bring in Smith and Rickard would later score on a sacrifice fly to right by Nick Delp.

The Cardinals would add 2 more insurance runs in the 7th inning. Dipino and Sousa would score on RBI’s by Dom Maggio and Johnson. Meisel, who threw the entire game for the Cardinals, shut down the Blueclaws in the 7th inning to get the complete game win 10-4.
